Flaming water heater

What happened was the top element sprung a small leak. The water trickled down the front to the bottom element. The bottom elements chamber filled with water, which caused an arc.

The arc burnt up the insulation and the bottom thermostat control. When I went to the basement, smoke was coming out of the bottom element chamber. Fixing the water heater was not the way I planned on spending my morning.
