The ones i have picked ,seem to be ht and miss -- wonder what causes that ?
Pare they coming from the same plant? Did they ripping at the same time? If not then soil moisture during ripening time could make a difference as can plant variety.
Do you have a very big patch?

Sam, does that mean your plants are wild? Blackberries only produce on second year growth so the age of the plants shouldn't matter. The put out new canes every year.

Spreading is a good thing when it comes to blackberries, not so much when your talking about ole ladies butts.
