The process of achieving the proper torque is actually stretching the fastener a given distance. In the ultra high end engine building world torque is a baseline measurement. Bolt/fastener stretch is the real indicator.

I'm horrible about torquing things, my well calibrated hand, is my torque wrench. Lugs get my well calibrated impact...
