Why is this recited at 4 of July celebrations?

I thought the fourth was about celebrating freedom. Not honoring tyranny.

I've never heard anybody do that. I've heard the DoI recited though but it's been awhile since that even.

Folks around me think the fourth is about getting the biggest fireworks you can possibly get, and as many of them as you can afford, which is funny, since some of them obviously can't afford trash collection. Then you drink beer, and make it rain fire from the sky.

Why do people pledge allegiance to a flag and a nation indivisible on a day honoring independence?

or drink beer and rain fire from the sky for days before AND after... at least thats how it is in my hood. 4th celebrations start in earnest around 6/29. The smoke is so thick you cant see 100 yards on the 4th, and they finally quiet down around the 9th. And of course they think many other holidays warrant fireworks... new years, labor day, memorial day, national bellybutton lint appreciation day... You get the picture.

It appears a cliche is in order:

For those who understand, no explanation is necessary.

For those who do not understand, no explanation will suffice.

Though I do love how "I don't know how to help" turns into "not worth helping"

    Do anarchists shoot off fireworks?

If they do, I think they should flip them over and shoot them right into the friggin ground.

    That will show the man.
