Yeah, I actually think Cerakote is the way to go if it is badly pitted.

That would most certainly remove all of the remaining finish. I would have to see it in person, but it may not be all that bad. A refinish is most definitely in order if you want it to look right. Might be able to get away with a blasting and some files depending on how deep the pits are. Like I said, I know nothing about the bluing process if that's the direction you are leaning.

Cerakote give you a lot of options and most of them really look great. Here is one in Midnight Blue.
