Looked at both, bought the 709. Only problem I've had was the first trip to the range got a little limp wristed on about three shots son in law was watching me said tighten up I did and no problems got around 200 through it so far.
Everyone should buy what they find appealing, but I would trust a Ruger product over a Taurus product for defensive reliability in just about every case.

I on the other hand, would have absolutely no doubts trusting my life to a Taurus. I did so every day for a few years, then I discovered a grand treasure called "CZ" .
I would like to pick up a 709 or 740 eventually to replace my current pocket gun.
