Im going to go look at a gun that is for sale from a individual and I was wondering if there is any way to check and see if the gun was stolen before I buy it?

SOME police stations will "run the serial numbers" for you, but NOT without the gun being present.

Call your local PD and ask. Then ask the individual if they would be willing to take it into the PD with you tagging along. YOU do not want to be the possessor if it DOES turn up stolen!

There are a couple of online sites that list stolen guns, but I'm sure thery're not all inclusive.

If you have a buddy thats a cop, have him run it. My ex father in law runs em for me. Had a guy trying to sell me a Ruger Super blackhawk .44 mag once for $100, my ex fil ran it,came back clear, and I damn near ripped my pocket off trying to get my money out fast enough. There is probably a database on the web too, but I don't know how trusty that would be if it's not the one leo's use.

Getting the guy to fill out a signed receipt with the serial number might help, if it turned out stolen...at least you could prove who sold it to you.
