WVPPS (Wabash Valley Practical Pistol Shooters) has steel matches the first Saturday of every month (starting on April 4). Compared with FNS, WVPPS more closely adheres to the Steel Challenge format in terms of COF and starting position. Both matches are tons of fun, FNS is just less formal.
FNS is similar to the Steel Challenge, but not strictly adhering to their regs and variations on the COFs. It's a lot of fun and usually has a good turnout, we've seen 40-50 shooters in warmer weather.
If you're interested in stricter adherance to Steel Challenge regs and COFs etc. Atlanta Conservation Club has a steel challenge match on the 3rd Sat of every month (weather permitting). Reach the steel match director at bangandclang-targets@yahoo.com
FNS is not an SCSA sanctioned match, and I do not believe they follow the Steel Challenge rules in all areas, although the format is generally similar.
For me, the most surprising difference between FNS and SCSA sanctioned steel challenge was gun starting position. At FNS you start each stage with gun drawn at low ready, regardless of which class you're shooting in. In regular steel challenge you draw from the holster at the buzzer with all pistol classes except .22. Also, FNS does not use stop plates and course layouts are non standard.
For some reason, FNS just seems like it's more fun.
WVPPS and RCC near Terre Haute will be shooting Steel Challenge Matches starting April 4th. There will be four stages each month, and two of them will be regular Steel Challenge stages each time and two will be similar but non-standard courses of fire. As steel is available and set time allows a fifth stage can get thrown into the mix.
