Michael Osterholm is the director of the University of Minnesota center for infectious disease research.

The speech is 22 minutes long. Some highlights. He personally knows less about Ebola now than he did 6 months ago.He has worked with doctors without borders on the current outbreak.Doctors without borders(MSF)has reported cases in Liberia from admission to death where the patient never had a fever. He also talks about a macaque monkey test done in Canada with virus from Liberia(6 weeks ago)that has yet to publish, and the results of that test are alarming everyone because of the viral load in the lungs is higher than any other known ebola strain<span class="st">.

Worth the time to watch.

Adding some facts from the New England Journal of Medicine.
12.9% did not have a fever (11.8% of those who died did not) - About 1 in 8 do NOT have a fever.

23.6% did not feel fatigue (23.6% of those who died did not) - About 1 out of 4 do NOT feel fatigue.

32.4% did not vomit (30.6% of those who died did not) - About 1 out of 3 do NOT vomit.

34.4% did not have diarrhea (31.7% of those who died did not) - Anout 1 out of 3 do NOT have diarrhea.

In addition:

35.5% did not have loss of appetite (36% of those who died did not)

46.6% did not have a headache (46.2% of those who died did not)

55.7% did not have abdominal pain (56.5% of those who died did not)

60.6% did not have joint pain (59.3% of those who died did not

61.1% did not have muscle pain (59.8% of those who died did not)

63.0% did not have chest pain (59.8% of those who died did not

79.2% did not have conjunctivitis (red Ebola eyes) (76.4% of those who died did not)

82.0% did not have unexplained bleeding (79.8% of those who died did not)

29.6% of Ebola patients DO cough. And 32.5% of people who died from Ebola did develop a cough.(1 out of 3)

... the viral load in the lungs is higher than any other known ebola strain.

Interesting. That may explain, in part, the increase in virulence. I wonder if it might also be part of the path toward airborne transfer. I mean, the more it is in the lungs, the more it may be shed in breathing.

Of course, it still may not be truly aerosol, just more likely to be contained in whatever gets ejected from the lungs.

Oh snap. Someone should tell the CDC....

Sounds like plan B, C, D and F should be considered and worked out pretty quickly as he said. We barely planned for the obvious situations that have occurred already and really need to be getting the logistics of what ifs in place. For the US to not be willing to put everything needed to get a grasp on every angle of this is criminal. We pi$$ more money away for crony pet projects. Seems there has to be a giant list of feel good programs that someone should divert funding from to this- yeah, sorry nope don't need this about 1000 times over. "Stopping this funding is a hard choice" said NO politician ever.

Ok, I don't have a fever, fatigue, diarrhea or vomiting. My appetite's fine, no headache or abdominal pain, joints and muscles aren't acting up more than usual, chest and eyes are good, not bleeding anywhere. I do cough once in a while, though. I must have ebola. Been nice knowing you guys.

I simply refuse to accept the pronouncements regarding the transmission of this virus. There's too much we don't know, and it's wrong to assume the best from ignorance; we should be assuming the worst since we don't know.

Plan E sucked from the beginning. I don't know how it made it past corporate.

I'm glad to see more research coming out on ebola, though.

So a significant number of people just up and died after exhibiting no symptoms?:dunno:

If you have no pain, no loss of appetite, no bleeding, no cough, what exactly are their symptoms? What is their cause of death?

They still go through a Cytokine storm it is how Ebola actually kills you.
Some of the primary symptoms of a cytokine storm are extreme fatigue, depression, anxiousness, anxiety, insomnia, intermittent hot flashes, inflammation, tingling, skin conditions, swollen glands, feverish, abdominal pain, and nausea.
This strain of Ebola is just presenting differently than past strains where high fever,"ebola eyes",and bleeding where normally present, it kills just as effectively though.

Link from Drudge, with some honesty.
How the microscopic Ebola virus kills thousands - The Washington Post

The virus has its quirks: Some people infected with Ebola never get sick at all. Some who become sick shed massive amounts of virus — they’re “super-shedders” — but others do not. Fever is typically the first symptom of Ebola virus disease, but sometimes it’s a lagging indicator or never appears at all.
The virus is mutating, like all viruses, and could conceivably — this is a very remote possibility — change its mode of transmission, a fact that has been much hyped in recent weeks by those with an alarmist frame of mind.

...
There have emerged in recent weeks two overlapping scientific narratives about this Ebola outbreak. They might be labeled the microbiology narrative vs. the epidemiology narrative. Call it the small picture vs. the big picture.
The microbiologists study the virus up close, scrutinizing its structure, genetic sequence and behavior as it invades a cell, hijacks cellular machinery, replicates and then spreads through the body. A drop of bodily fluid can potentially contain a million virus particles.
In theory, a single virus particle — a virion — is capable of being infectious and, after replicating billions of times, killing the host. That makes Ebola unusually infectious and virulent.
But that’s not the same thing as contagious. Ebola in humans is spread only through direct contact with virus-laden bodily fluids, and is not as transmissible as such airborne viruses as influenza and measles.
Some scientists have said that perhaps this strain of the virus generates an unusually high “viral load,” with more virus present in any drop of fluid. That would make it more contagious simply as a function of mathematics. So far there is no published data supporting that.

Other good points in the article.

That is an excellent presentation. I've been struggling for the words to suggest that the act of oversimplifying precautions and trying to avoid panic, is actually going to lead to panic. He put it much more clearly, along with his credibility of research access.
thanks for the link
