    In the trees
OG and I were on our homeward commute this evening, a little earlier than usual. We were creeping along in the slow line that is the everyday ramp from West St. onto I-70 EB in downtown Indy. We were almost into the slow lane when I hear what I think is crashing vehicles but traffic is still moving and I can’t find the source. I told OG what I thought I heard and she agreed but didn’t see anything either.

Once I make it into the lane and begin the slow roll up the hill I look in my side-view mirror and discover the cause of the noise. In the WB center lane is a motionless body. A few yards further in the fast lane and median is a car facing the wrong way and the remains of the motorcycle that belonged to the man lying in the roadway. A tractor-trailer was stopped and I could see that driver getting out of the cab.

This is not the first time I’ve seen death but I wondered about the fate of the biker so when I got home I tried to find some news about it. I found nothing more than a mention on the Fox 59 traffic twitter feed: TRAFFIC ALERT: I70 westbound closed at exit 79A downtown due to crash involving motorcycle. So I’m speculating that I saw a fatality because I can’t substantiate it.
And that got me to wondering – just how many traffic fatalities are occurring that we never hear about. The numbers are probably frightening. And of those numbers, how many are due to a “distracted driver”? Contemplating this number makes me angry enough to sit down a write this thread. Again, I am speculating because I don’t (and apparently never will) know the facts of this particular crash, but honestly, how do you crash into the vehicle in front of you in rush hour traffic? Well you stop watching what’s going on in front of you. And what causes you to stop watching what’s going on in front of you? I could say “fill in the blank here” but you probably know where I’m headed with this…

I stopped looking at text messages while driving about two years ago. I did it the same way I stopped smoking, one day I got fed up with what a risk it was to my health that I just quit. Have you noticed the increase these days in vehicles with their grilles knocked out? Have you noticed the increase in fender benders on the highway during rush hour? Have you stopped and contemplated why the big auto manufacturers are pouring research dollars into “collision avoidance” technology? It’s because society can’t unplug long enough to navigate a lethal weapon from point A to point B safely so they don’t involuntarily damage property or takes another person’s life, or their own for that matter. My LEO neighbor says it’s all but impossible to prove. I think it should carry the same punishment as DUI, that sure would cure the masses of the habit. It’s crazy, the same LEO neighbor says 30% of ALL drivers are looking at something other than the road in front of them.

I’m going to speculate again, somewhere a family is mourning the unexpected loss of one of their own. A loss that could have so easily been avoided; a mistake that someone will have to live with. You know this is a problem, I hope that you are not a contributor. Tell you loved ones, tell your friends.

If the news didn't report it as a fatality it probably was not one.... more often than not car accidents appear WAY WAY worse than they actually are. I have never been on a fatality accident run where it did NOT make the news in some fashion.

Agree. People need to put their phones down. I'd be happy if they suspended people's licenses for a year if they get caught using their phone while driving.

If I'm driving, I'm 100% focused on.....wait for it.....driving. One of my co workers recently saw me driving, and said I "looked so serious and focused with my hands on the wheel and concentrating on driving." Scared the **** out of me that she thought it was out of the ordinary.....

Ive been rear ended twice in the last two years by people texting. I've been hit at least once per year for the last 5 years while running. People think they're above the norm and better than others at multi tasking. Everyone thinks they're a special flower.....They aren't. Bunch of idiots out there on the road.

    Great quote I saw:

"Better not drive intoxicated. You'll likely get crashed into by someone on their cell phone and get a DUI."

This is one of the reasons we sold our Harley's. Way to many idiots that have no clue what id beyond the hood. Zero situational awareness. See it every time we leave the house. Right hand full of phone and eyes are not on the road.

    Unplug, drive your rig.

Had a couple of people I know die on bikes. I sold my gsxr and drz shortly after. It wasn't me I had to worry about. It was the idiots on the road.

Currently, I'm bobbing a ls650 (650cc thumper). Its only going on back roads with little traffic or around the neighborhood once it's done. Just can't shake the two wheel bug completely. But the wife will NOT be riding with me anymore.

Headed south on 37 today towards Bedford, I passed a guy with a magazine on the wheel as he was going 55 down the road. Took me a second to realize that, I really did see that. Shaking my head...

I have seen 2 bikers text while riding on I465. They had to be going 70 at the time. Shocked me. I would never have dreamed anyone would do that on a motorcycle.

indyjohn, I see it EVERYDAY..... I have been driving for a living, for well over 500,000 miles.....

I now drive between 100-140 miles a night, and never leave Marion Co. .....

It no longer surprises me what I see going on in the front seat of a car, by the driver.....

Reading, texting, watching a dvd..... it is truly amazing .....

My brother's car still has the marks on the rear bumper and trunk where the part of a bike that was involved in a fatal wreck came loose and flew towards him. The guy driving the bike for some reason didn't stop for the light like all of the other cars and trucks at the intesection. My brother went to the aid of the rider and his passenger but she didn't make it (I'm not sure about the driver).

It's not just the texters causing wrecks and killing people on bikes...

More than once I have done a "reverse pass" when I have someone tailgating me and talking on their cell phone. I jump out in the left lane, slow down and when they go by, I pull in behind them. This way I can keep an eye on them. Fidiots!

I was listening to a fascinating interview on Fresh Air tonight with a tech reporter talking about the technology in cars right now that help prevent them from crashing into each other. Cars with rush hour cruise that follows the car in front of you.

He said the biggest challenge of fully self driving cars is actually keeping the occupants awake and alert enough to take control of the wheel if the car determines a driver does need to take over.

He said all of the crashes you heard about recently with Google's self driving cars have actually been caused by human error.

He predicts self driving cars aren't the end goal, but that ultimately automakers will focus on creating cars that are really hard to crash into each other.

This is the reason we are seeing the level of stupidity on the road. Cars are to freaking easy to drive. They near drive themselves anymore allowing the Darwin candidate behind the wheels to apply make up, watch DVD's, run a laptop while talking on the cell, and on and on and on.

Yep... cut the power steering assist in half, and get rid of the automatic transmission, and there will not be near as many accidents.... and the accidents will be disproportionately women because stick shift.

I've worked several fatals that never made the news. It depends on the time of day, neighborhood, who's involved, etc. Most pedestrian strikes that are fatal aren't reported, either.

Just thinking back, there was the guy who tried to pass the semi and got caught under the trailer. There was the chick who missed the curve, got ejected, hit a "Y" in a tree and her brain came out, there was the guy who was riding with his drunk friend who crossed the center line and hit a delivery truck where the driver was also drinking, guy on a motorcycle who kissed the guardrail and went for a short flight, there was the chick on Madison crossing the road after dark who got drove under and her wig stuck in the windshield, a couple times Bhurmese guys tried to play Frogger on Madison and didn't make it, I don't think any of those made the news.

I guarantee you if you're not into criminal activity your odds of being injured or killed by traffic accident are much higher than being shot or stabbed.

I was reading some years back after the ABS brake systems became the norm. The engineers were commenting that people take every new improvement to the EDGE.One said the only way to get peoples attention was to put a big SPIKE sticking out of the steering wheel.

The only thing I have not seen here that you would constantly see at night on the DC Beltway, is porn playing on the DVD player. I'm like others here, I don t get the scooters out much anymore.
