Man shoots and injures brother, kills self

UNION TOWNSHIP | A man described by his family as "mentally unstable" shot and wounded his disabled brother and then killed himself Wednesday morning inside the white, two-story farmhouse the brothers shared just south of the Walgreens warehouse on U.S. 30, Porter County police said.
The shooting was reported at 8:42 a.m. Wednesday at the home Ronald Hull and Lawrence Hull shared at 196 N. County Road 750 West in Union Township.
Police said Lawrence Hull, 56, shot Ronald Hull, 69, in the neck and then fatally shot himself. Police said Wednesday afternoon that the injured brother was in the intensive care unit at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, but he was expected to survive.
Shannan Granzow, a niece of the Hull brothers, said the family learned of the shooting shortly after it happened because her father got a call from Ronald Hull stating "Larry shot me."
Porter County police Maj. Steve Lawrence said police were still trying to determine what led to the shooting. He said that, aside from the brothers, no one else is believed to have been involved.
"As of right now, crime scene technicians are at the scene and detectives are trying to determine what started the dispute," Lawrence said late Wednesday morning.
Granzow said Lawrence Hull, the man believed to have perpetrated the shooting, had been mentally unstable his entire life.
"Lately, he's been really, really unstable and obsessing about people (who are) hunting and fishing," she said.
Granzow said neither Lawrence nor Ronald Hull worked. She said the disabled Ronald lived on Social Security, collected aluminum cans and sold vegetables.
Granzow said Lawrence, who had not worked for decades, had a prior arrest after causing trouble at a sand pit and once underwent mental health treatment.
Police said members of the county SWAT Team responded to the call and entered the home, finding Lawrence Hull dead in the kitchen and Ronald Hull injured on a couch in the living room.
