Setting COL on new Rifle

What is the prefered method of setting the COL on a model 92 lever action rifle?
Since I'm fairly new to reloading, I;m just full of questions. LOL
I know that each gun will have it's own preference for COL, but how does one find out what that is?
To expand on this topic, how do you decide and what method do you use to find the best COL for any style firearm?

I modify the cases fired in your rifle for the Hornady/Stoney Point OAL tool for $6.00.

With a lever gun, you may not be able to reach the throat because of the OAL restrictions between the magazine tube/carrier and bolt transition.

M L McPherson has written several articles on how to modify the actions to accept a longer OAL if you run into this situation.

i measured my 30aw but the measurment didn't matter because i could only seat the bullet as long as the gun would allow for feeding
