While this is true, they ARE making new 870 Super Shortys out of pistol grip only express shotguns...

The shotguns that Serbu is starting with are pistol grip only shotguns from Remington, complete with 18" barrel. Serbu is shortening the barrel and making them into AOWs. This is possible with pistol grip only donor guns, but not with guns that ever had a stock.
