You don't need to be classified to shoot a local level 1 USPSA match but most matches have at least 1 classifier.
Every once in a while some clubs will run a classifier match that will have 4-6 classifier’s.
If you join USPSA you will get classified after a few matches.
Being classified doesn't really change your results in the match. You will still finish the same in the results within the division you shoot and in the overall results(no such thing actually but everyone still wants to see them).
Getting classified is great to track your progress and see the rusults of getting better after shooting for a while but not necessary for starting out.

Ah, makes sense. Been studying a lot of IDPA and thought I’d like to try out USPSA as well.
