I'm traveling to Detroit, MI next week and want to know if I can carry in the city? I will be at a City office as well (not a courtroom). I know Michigan has a reciprocating agreement with Indiana and I can carry in the Michigan, but is there restrictions in the Motor City?

I used to live there and carried regularly into Detroit. Gov't buildings are always a crapshoot and may not be good to go. IIRC, Michigan has a great pre-emption statute which keeps Detroit from trying to get around the pistol license law. In fact, a few years ago Detroit had the highest justifiable homicide rate of any city, largely due to MI's good carry law and castle doctrine.

You really need to find out what MI's carry laws are. MI may accept Indiana's LTCH, but you need to follow their rules while in their state.

Non-residents of Michigan wishing to carry a concealed pistol in Michigan:

If you are a non-resident of Michigan with a valid concealed pistol permit from your home state, Michigan will recognize your permit. However, you must carry in conformance with any and all restrictions appearing on the permit. You are subject to Michigan’s concealed pistol law including but not limited to restrictions on where a concealed pistol may be carried. Please review the information provided on this website for further information.

"CCW Reciprocity Overview In 2000, the legislature significantly amended Michigan's firearms laws to make Michigan what is known as a "shall issue" state. Previously, county gun boards were given considerable discretion to issue concealed pistol permits and the decision often depended on a showing of need by the applicant, which varied from county to county. Public Act 381, which went into effect on July 1, 2001, changed that so that anyone who met the strict qualifications of the law would receive a concealed pistol permit. Today, thousands of responsible Michigan residents have been issued concealed pistol permits.
While anyone interested in this subject is encouraged to check Act 381, generally, the law provides that a person who meets certain requirements will be issued a concealed pistol permit. The principal requirements are:

1.
[*] The applicant is 21 years of age.
[*] The applicant has resided in Michigan for at least 6 months.
[*] The applicant is a citizen or legal resident of the United States.
[*] The applicant has successfully taken a gun safety course.
[*] The applicant is not under certain court orders, such as those involving mental disabilities, personal protection orders, legal incapacitation, etc.
[*] The applicant does not have a pending felony charge and has never been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors within a specified time period.
[*] The applicant has not been involuntarily committed due to a mental illness, adjudged insane, guilty but mentally ill or pled insanity in a criminal case.
[*] The applicant does not have a diagnosed mental illness at the time of the application.
[*] The applicant has not been dishonorably discharged from the US military.
[*] The applicant is not subject to a court order prohibiting the possession of a firearm.

Again, anyone interested in applying for a concealed pistol permit must check the statute for all the prerequisites for licensure.
The licensing process is handled by the county concealed weapon licensing board. An application kit is available from your local police agency or the county clerk's office. The applicant needs to be fingerprinted by the county sheriff and then submit the application to the county clerk for the board's review.
Once issued, a concealed pistol permit allows a person to carry anywhere in the state except where legally prohibited or in the so called "gun free zones" specified in section 5(o) of the act. The holder must also declare to a peace officer who stops the person that he or she is carrying a concealed pistol. The law also imposes an implied consent to submit to alcohol or chemical testing if a police officer suspects a person is carrying a concealed pistol under the influence.
Additional details regarding Michigan's Concealed Pistol law is available from the web sites linked to this one or from reading the law, which is also linked.

The way I understand it if you are going to be carrying any IED it must be in your underwear.

I would stop outside of Detroit, rent a car (get the insurance) strap on my vest, carry the sc on my ankle and the service in a IWB.

Detroit is not too bad if you stay out of the ghettos. Just remember in Michigan Concealed means CONCEALED!!!

Also, when I lived there there was no carry in a place that makes more than 50% of its revenue from on-sale alcohol and no carry at .02 bac or higher. You do have a duty to immediately disclose your weapon to an leo who stops you. Also, IIRC there was no carry in church unless you had permission from the pastor but I'm not absolutely sure of my recollection on that one.

There has never been any such restriction. The law says primary source of income, not more than half.

To the OP- No municipality in MI can make gun laws more strict than the state law. You are good in Detroit. The 10 items posted above are your only restrictions.

The only thing I'll add is that OC is legal and you must disclose to any officer that stops you. Stay safe, the D is a tough town.

No. It has been tried and doesn't stick. The OC movement has been pretty big here and they have made great strides. I don't personally agree that it is smart to OC, but it is legal and you shouldn't have much trouble if you do. There has been a pretty good precedence set and most agencies know its legal and leave you alone.

Thanks for all of the responses. There are a lot of ways to look at this situation. I think the answer is "C", Detroit is a City you should carry in! If I make it back I will give you a post.

I made it out alive!! Funniest thing though, I was in a very nasty area, a lot of people on the street doing nothing with temps in the single digits, abandoned buildings, etc. and right in the middle of the road is a burning car. No shist! My business is a few blocks away and the pucker factor a little high. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but just in case I was prepared. It all worked out and I'm glad to be back in Indiana. Thanks for the responses.

OK . Things must have changed a bit. I rememebr a link to a thread where someone was disarmed in a Meijer. Although I guess that happens here too.

Still I won't blatently OC when I'm up there. Especially in the city.
