I've got an 1187 Sportsman, my first shotgun, that came with a 28" barrel.
Purchased a Rem 18.5" barrel for it.
I've been shooting Federal Target Loads with no issues. Not that I've shot a lot of shells.

    Ran across these in stock:
Fiocchi 12ga Exacta Buck Shot 80rds in Plano Ammo Can 12FHV00B - Fiocchi - 12 Gauge - Shotgun Ammunition - Ammunition

Took the shells and the gun with the 18.5" barrel to the range last night.
Out of 20 shells fired, 17 or 18 did not eject. They were pulled from the chamber, but would be left hanging with the non brass end of the hull just out in the opening of the ejection port.

Suggestions as to what may be the culprit is appreciated.

    Crappy ammo.

The shells were probably not high enough velocity to cycle.

My semi auto Mossberg is picky on various rounds too. Just find out what brand of shells work good in your shotgun and stick with them.

Those wouldn't run in my Saiga 12 either. They aren't labeled as low recoil, but they perform that way.

I think it is quality ammo, just run it in a pump gun.

My 11-87 Police is finicky with low velocity ammo. As the others stated, experiment with ammo. When you find something that it likes to eat, feed it a steady diet of that and run the other stuff through an 870.

A couple of extra thoughts. I have an 11-87 Premier that will cycle anything I put through it. I have found that some low recoil rounds require real close attention to making sure the gas ports are thoroughly cleaned and a new O-Ring installed. This helps to assure that all cycle gases are actually used and not leaking by. One additional thing to verify (I know this by actual experience) is to make sure the piston is not installed upside-down. You probably have checked all of this but wanted to put it out there...just in case.
