I purchased something from Sears that is without a doubt an open box item and the box is all beat up. Would you keep it or take it in and exchange it in the store for an unopened item?

Definitely take it back, if it were something simple that was easily verified to be good upon inspection like say, a 2x4, then inspect and keep. Something complex and easily screwed up, return it.

Yeah, this is the item in question exactly as it arrived at my front door.

I haven't spent dime one at a Sears store in over 10 years. The goods are shoddy, the prices are not competitive, and the customer service is worse than JC Penney. They are NOT where America shops.

Shoulda gone to WalMart instead. :):

As far as price, they'll match competitors (minus Black Friday type stuff).

I certainly share everybody's distrust. On the other hand, I'm glad the stores will take back open box items and give me all of my money back. I've bought things, opened the boxes, and taken stuff out and then decided it wasn't what I really wanted. I make sure all the manuals and doo-dads get put back in.

They won't even price match their own internet prices. They had a gas stove on their web page $50 cheaper than the exact same model on the floor. I asked the lady if they would match the price. She said, "We can't compete with internet prices." :dunno:

I said, "It's your own ad." She still refused.

I told her she was nuts and took the Sears ad to HH Gregg. I got a slightly better gas stove and they matched the Sears price. So I bought a new open box over the range microwave as well for half price.

    Screw Sears. Take it back.

What about filing a report with the shipping company (USP, FedEx, ??). They may have caused the damage. Would at least make them aware of the condition.

Track down Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck. Set box on fire. Throw flaming box through living room window.

    Problem solved.
