R.I.G rag

Hey guys probably a noob question but is the R.I.G rag only for preventing rust or also taking of rust? I posted a thread about a gun I have that has some rust issues that I want to be removed and people have been mentioning it and I'm curious

It's similar in texture to a sheepskin-type seat cover. Imagine using that to wipe down metal objects (or gun parts) using gun grease with it. Now, you've got the idea.

Rig is a grease and the rags are pretreated with it.
