Hello to everyone. I've got a question on who manufacters a good 7.62 by 54 (or is it by 50? I know there is a by 39 and that is not what I am wondering about) assault rifle. Does anyone have a favorite model or any warnings of what to stay away from? I am interested in something more modern than the Garand. What would something like this cost and what would I look for in basic features? Thanks

If its 76.62x51 youre after, many exist:
PTR91s (Watch out for Hesse Junk, mags for HK91 clones are about the same for a Value meal)
Saigas in .308 (neat guns, Bradis has em by the bushel)
M-14s (modern variations are really neat)
Cetme (mag complications, but wonderful minute of human rifles for long distance)

The list goes on and on.. :)

I am looking for an FAL 308Win. It will also fire the 7.62NATO but becarefull reloading as the case is thicker which can make loads hot.

Anyone know where I can get one and NOT break the bank doing so?

Are you after the AR15's big brother? Stick with the Armalite, then.
They start around $1200 and can go to over $2000.

Armalite and Noveske are the only ones who make an AR-10 (7.62x51)
DPMS, Hesse and Remington (DPMS renamed) also make 7.62x51 ARs.

Lets not forget Rock River Arms is making a 7.62 AR that uses FAL mags (metric or inch pattern)

I saw 3 of them a few Indy 1500's ago, nice rifles not enough money available at the time or one would have been mine!

I love the M1A line of rifles. You can spend from 1k to as much as you want.

These rifles are .308 rifles though.

Me too!!! Here is my Bush rifle in a folding stock:

I love you bushy m1a! I have a scout that I keep trying to hurt and it just keeps on moving; the bushy is just about the perfect setup if you ask me.
.308, pistol grip, the best gas system and sight radius, excellent mags plus all around robustness of the M14.
    nothing better.
