I have a Stainless 1911 that I am experimenting with on polishing the flats up to a high gloss.
I have used various grit sandpapers and it is now sanded in 2000 grit. It looks pretty shiny right now but I would like to remove the imperfections the 2000 grit leaves.
Any suggestions on what kind of compound or polish to use next?

Semichrome. I think Brownells has it. It has some abrasive to it also. If you do not want the abrasive, Flitz has none and is a good poslish.

I have used aluminum wheel polish on the stainless counter top at work. It gets so shiny that they make me dull it because the lights reflect straight into your eyes!

Semichrome, Flitz and Jewelers Rouge can all be picked up locally. I have all 3 if you want to try before you buy.... :)

Since there are plenty of Auto parts stores near me, I am going to pick up some mothers today and give that a try.

Do you have any pics? I have a Taurus PT1911 that I really like, with the exception of the HUGE billboard on the sides of the slide. I've been planning to make a jig to hold the slide while I "sand" it on a glass table. Is that what/how you did it?

If you have a dremel, get some of the cloth buffing pads, and tlhe 3 stick assortment package of buffing compound from Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, or Sears Hardware. You can probably find it at other hardware stores, but these are where I have seen the compound. You can also use a buffing wheel chucked in a drill if you don't have a dremel.
