Not that familiar with Florida, but grew up near South Padre Island on the west side of the Gulf.
I mainly went to Florida to drink and fish. Been there a lot, but always avoided storms.

But, if it resembles the western coast much, you have to go a few miles inland to reach an elevation of 12' to 15' and quite a few more to reach 20' so even 12' of surge is going swamp large sections of coastline.
