I found this over the weekend and wondered if the guy hit a rock or what, you could hear the steel hit and bullet return. Very lucky guy

When you have divots formed in mild steel and a bullet hits the divot it going to go somewhere and that is normally back towards the shooter. I have seen this happen time and time again when people shoot mild steel. With AR-500 like the targets from Bobcat this is not a problem.

    Best part:

spectator one: That got you right in the side of the head!

    spectator two: Where'd it hit?

shooter: RIGHT IN THE SIDE OF MY HEAD!

+1. My club decided, after much time, effort, and research that a 50 cal at 100 yds or less was a catastrophe waiting to happen.

I've never shot any rifle at steel unless it was 100 yards or more, and that was only a .223.

I have no idea what the safe distance for a 50 bmg is, but it's got to be a long way, I'd imagine. Perhaps 500+

If you had seen the hood and roof of the shell of my truck at the Glock Match this weekend, you would have a new respect for lead hitting steel. My pickup was parked on the E side of tac bay 1, even with the shooting line, and about 25 ft up range of the plate rack. The side wall of the bay is about 20 ft tall, and the roof is steel plate hung so it deflects as much as possible back down into the bay. I estimate there was close to a pound of lead fragments, (equal to 30 or 35 230gr bullets) had enough energy after hitting the steel plates, to travel up high enough to travel about 30 ft sideways and still clear a 20 ft wall.
