The Houthi insurgency, coupled with the secessionist insurrection in the country's south and the spread of al Qaeda militant violence, has severely threatened Yemen's prospects of transitioning to a stable democracy in the wake of former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh's ousting during the Arab Spring protests of 2012.

Not every green shoot you see coming up in the spring bears flowers or sweet fruit.

Yemen has been squarely in the crapper for years.

Yup. It's been the region's south side of Chicago for years.

I assume they are lacking a certain natural resource that many of their neighbors have in abundance. Well, at least their neighbors that we seem to care about.;)

yemen has for years been like a truck stop bathroom decorated in a splatter of explosive diarrhea that would make Jackson Pollock jealous. In the crapper might be a step up.

Yemen hasn't been a garden spot since the Brits left, but it hasn't had rebels running through the streets of the capitol, either.

Yemen is the kind of place where you can buy an RPG cheaper than you can buy a moped. In '04, a soviet RPG was about $35 in open air markets. The government isn't in control and hasn't been for a long time.

Yeah, Yemen and Somalia have been on similar trajectories for a long time IMHO. Somewhat different reasons, but the common theme is a fundamental inability for people to get along in a way that maximizes what resources they have.

Come to think of it, a bunch of countries fit that description to one degree or another.

So? Why should I care about Yemen? It's not like we're best buds with them or anything.

Two reasons. The first is the same reason we care about Somalia but ignore atrocities in the rest of Africa. Lots of oil tankers pass by their coastline every day, and we and the global economy want those to sail unmolested. Yemen also has some strategic value for the US Military, predominately the Navy. There was some talk of putting a new US naval base there awhile back, but I don't know what the results were.

What is it about the Middle East that seems to keep it in a constant state of internal warfare? I mean, every region has its problems, but the Middle East just seems to never come out of them. From one insurgency/dictatorship combo to the next it seems.
