    What?

They weren't using Nashville as a martial-law training camp.

The people in NO knew Katrina was coming and most had time to get out of its way. Peoples true nature shines during times of chaos and the crimes that were commited by some unfortunately made a horrible situation 1,000 times worse.

I do not see how you conclude they were using NO as a "training camp." The state, local and federal governments all made mistakes, but a disaster like Katrina cannot be planned for with a 100% success rate. Law and order had to be established before any sort of cleanup could begin.

Thanks for the vid. A type of question that is often asked in the Survival section of this forum usually boils down to what will happen in various disaster scenarios.

One thing folks often fail to realize is that what will happen is LARGELY dependent on the character of the people to whom it happens. What might be the temporary 'end of the world' in New Orleans, or Los Angeles, etc., may only warrant 15 min. news coverage in Nashville, etc. Similar causes, a flood here or a flood there, a significant power outage here or an outage there, can have very different results depending on what I'll call the "strength" of the people involved.

    Choose where you live carefully.

(And if you can't choose where you live, at least be aware that the cultural fabric of the community where you live is a significant factor; and one that folks don't often recognize the importance of.)

Central and southern Indiana saw significant flooding a couple of years ago, but it was in mostly rural areas so it didn't really affect that many people. I think part of the reason that New Orleans got so much more coverage than Nashville has to do with the fact that being on the coast it was almost inevitable that some day New Orleans would get hit with a huge hurricane and when it did there was a lot of build up in the days leading up to the storm. Let's also not forget that a good majority of the Gulf Coast got whooped by Katrina, it wasn't just New Orleans.

Your last sentence says it all. NO got attention because the people there didn't know how to take care of themselves or didn't want to. And it was another convenient opportunity to bash the Bush administration for a apparent failure. But almost nobody gave any air time to Mississippi which was actually hit directly by the hurricane (NO flooding was less to do with the direct hurricane hit than failure of the levee systems) because they were quietly picking up the pieces and putting their lives back together WITHOUT government help.

Nashville didn't get the attention because it didn't have enough minority victims.
