Just purchased a new Black Duty V-Bob and the plan is to pick it up tomorrow since the online seller is located near by. It'll be my first 1911 and the first one I've fired since being in the service and carrying one a few decades ago.

i went with 9mm since I like the idea of a softer recoil on my older hands.

Any thoughts people have to share would be helpful before I hit the range. Ammo I should consider using, time period for breaking in, grips whether standard or upgrade, cleaning regimen or oils, the best magazines to use, holster,or any other thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Good choice in a VBOB I love mine (45ACP for me) personally I really like the thin VZ grips that come stock on the gun so I kept them. Now since you got a 9mm and there is less shall we say power to the system I always recommend people use Wilson Combat lite oil to keep the slide running easily and smoothly. A word on the Duty Treat too it is a tough as nails finish but it does not like super harsh solvents and they will discolor the treatment.

Once you get it I would personally clean it and re-lube as I am particular about my firearms especially 1911's. Never had any issues with ammo in my VBOB and for carry I load it with standard pressure Federal 230gr HST, the Dan Wesson magazines provided with the gun have worked flawlessly for me but if extras are needed Cobra mags and Wilson Combat are the way to go IMHO.

I bought my gun brand new and it did not require any break in either, granted at this point after owning several Dan Wessons and Wilson Combats I think the "break in myth" is a load of horse crap personally and if your 1911 wont run out of the box something is wrong with it. Just clean it often and shoot the hell out of it is my advice!!

Thank you you sir and I'll have to take a look into Wilson combat lite oil. I currently have Ballistol and I was planning on using that or have you found something better or is Wilson Combat Oil just a lubricant or is that capable of cleaning as well?

For cleaning off the frame and slide I actually use Kroil mostly, the duty treat makes wiping off carbon fouling quite easy I think half the time a little patch covered in Rem-Oil is all that is needed. I use Hoppes for the barrel. The reason I use Wilson Oil it is comes in larger bottles with a nice fine tip for applying lubricant to the rails and what not.

Congrats OP, and please post back once you've had a chance to run some rounds through your V-Bob! My first 1911 was also a V-Bob in the matte stainless finish, and in 45 ACP. Spectacular gun in every single way, I don't think you'll be disappointed in your choice.

The one thing I would strongly recommend is the "business card trick" when you re-insert the slide stop during re-assembly. This gun is manufactured to very, very tight tolerances, and I put a smallish idiot mark on mine the very first time I put it back together. Thankfully it wasn't anywhere near a full-length idiot mark, but I was just sick about it. I'm happy to say I have not repeated this mistake again!

Congrats on the new purchase, Dan! I recently sold all of my 45s, including my DW Specialist, one of my biggest regrets. Please report back after your first range trip. I'd love to hear how it went. Debating about picking one up, myself.

Will do, and I'm hoping to get out there fairly soon. This is an old passion re-visited just of late so I'm hoping to make a decision about which range I want to join first so it could take a couple of weeks. I've actually purchased more than a few guns since last fall after getting the bug. A 1911 as well as a beretta was on the list to include the Wilson Combat but there back order list goes back a ways and their delivery has been delayed. Anyway I had and still may consider getting a Wilson Combat 1911 at some point but in the meantime decided to get a Dan Wesson first.

So I just picked it up today and so far I'm liking the choice I made so far. I've also read a few reviews on the 1911 forum and although there maybe a few concerns about the 9mm I'm hoping the 124gr ammo I just received will further reduce the possibility of any issues I might have.

As a result of my search I came across one specific review by one gentleman about 7 yrs ago were he and a friend compared his DW V-Bob to an Ed Brown. Although there where a few things where the Ed Brown came up on top they both agreed that the Dan Wesson was about 95% if not more the weapon the Ed Brown was. I've also seen at least one YouTube review comparing a Dan Wesson to a Les Baer where basically the same sentiment was expressed. In fact mostof what I have seen so far a large majority agree that for the money you just can't beat a Dan Wesson. This certainly makes me feel good and to this point it certainly looks and feels fabulous as well.

Congrats on your DW, I had a few DW's myself a couple in 9mm and both of them were great 1911's. For the first couple of hundred rounds I would use high quality 9mm factory ammo to get it broke in as DW makes their guns with very tight tolerances. I used Metalform 9 rdn mags with the Springfield ramp but would also recommend Wilson combat magazines.

Dan Wesson recommends fp10 for cleaner/lube. They recommend cleaning and luring every 50 rounds during the first 500 rounds. I had a few ftf over the first 600 rounds with my duty treat valor but it's been flawless for 1000 rounds now. You picked a good one, mine has become my favorite pistol.

Thank you sir and actually I came across both of these things while checking out the 1911 forum but thanks for pointing them out as they both seem a bit unusual but specific for care to this firearm. I also saw that you don't want to put tape on the duty treat as that will cause discoloration. It seems that tape can adhear and thus draw out some of the oils on this gun which seems a bit odd as well. Anyway not sure I would ever want to but now I know better not to unless I want to pay to have reapply the coating or live with the results.

By the way did you get yours in 9mm or 45mm. If 9mm what ammo did you use. I just purchased 1000 reds of WWB in 124gr which I currently plan on using.

In my case the Metalform worked flawlessly in both of my DW's but I also come across a lot of positive feedback on the Wilson magazines.

I had a Colt 1991 built into a 9mm Commander with a Caspian slide and Infinity bull barrel by AllenM. I was amazed at how well I liked the end result. I was also wondering what mags to run. I bought Wilson Combat 500-9 mags and have had no problems. The Infinity barrel was ramped so that helped eliminate feeding issues. Winchester 124 gr. "NATO" seems to run well for me, but it has also not had any issues with the aluminum cased Federal 115 gr. I like to use at the indoor range so I don't have to chase my brass.
