I have a buddy who came to me wanting to know what kind of AK 47 he should get. I am very unfamilar with these guns and know nothing about them .. I did hear sometime ago that WASR's are junk.. any truth to this? What are some decent brands or makes to look into purchasing

Yes the money he wants to spend depends on what to look for. WASR is low end but all Ak"s are pretty reliable this is built into the design there is a lot of clearance in the internal working parts in an AK witch means they well operate in the worst conditions imaginable. I like Arsenal from Bulgaria but they run usually $700 and up. Keep looking and due some research you can find good deals prices on AK's seem to be on a down trend. Check out AK-47.net some pretty good info on there.

WASR's are great first AK's. They are perfect for the weekend shooter, are easy on the wallet, and function flawlessly. For some to say they are bottom of the barrel is unfair, because they are built tough, go bang, and do everything that a high end AK would do.

You can't go wrong with any of them.

Heres from our great mod Shooter 521 who seems to be pretty knowlegeable.

Unfortunately, the Second Golden Age of the AK is rapidly fading. If you're looking to get in now, your options are much more limited, prices are higher and the quality much lower than even just 4 or 5 years ago.

That said, here's my very generalized hierarchy:

    TOP
    Bulgarian milled receiver (SLR95, SAM5, SAM7, etc)
    Yugo M70 (Mitchell import)
    Hungarian SA83/85 series
    Steyr Maadi
    Pre-89 Polytech
    Vector

Kit builds by Krebs, InRange, Tromix, AK-USA and POHF (and others)

    MIDDLE
Bulgarian stamped receiver (SLR-105/106/107 and SLG series)
    Arsenal USA/Global Trades SSR series
    Saiga
    Pre-89 Norinco
Early Romanian imports (MkI and MkII, CUR-1/2, ROMAK)
    Interarms Tantal
    Yugo M70 (Century Build)
    Hungarian AMD65 (Century Build)
    TGI AK74

Kit builds by Lancaster, Henderson, Red Jacket and ORF (and others)

    BOTTOM
    Norinco MAK90
    Century SAR series
    Century Tantal
    Maadi MISR
    InterOrdnance STG & AK47C series
    Century GP1975
    Century WASR series

I'm here to seduce you to the dark side. No, not to the evil black rifle but to this:

Tell your buddy to go here:
Czechpoint USA - distributor of Sa vz. 58 rifles and Sa vz. 61 Scorpions
Price includes ALL fees. Just go to your FFL, fill out paperwork and take her to the range.

Once you hold one, you want one.:)

Once you shoot one, you are hooked.:rockwoot::ar15:

I had a WASR last summer and it was a "new" Century anyway that thing would Jam about every other round! It really scared the crap out of me once the bolt came forward and put a dent in the side of the case, needless to say I sold it quick, anyway I could not resist and traded for another one just last month this one seems to have a smoother action, the other WASR would "stick" sometimes when the bolt assembly moved rearward? anyway I could not resist a AK is a AK no other gun has so much persona as I would call it! I would still take my AR over that AK if I had to do some "precision" shooting!:D
