A/C unit might not be sized high enough.

    Might be ****in hot outside.
We have a winner! If it's like my home, the builders put in the bare minimum. Works fine most of the time but when the weather is over 90 it'll come on around noon and run until 10 or 11 at night. Only good thing is that it's so small it can't run the electric bill up that far. :D

I'm gonna go with this one. My truck will normally freeze me out in just a few minutes on a hot day. Usually, within a mile or two of leaving work, I'm turning the air down. Lately, the AC runs on high for the entire 11 mile trip.
We just bought a 15,500 BTU window unit to put in our living room because the central air just aint cutting it this year.

I'd suggest that THIS unit is low on coolant...

Our HVAC unit is 25 years old or so. On it's last legs.

Finding the money to replace it won't be fun...

While it's so hot, I turn it to 80. After it cools off at night, down to 78 to sleep. Yes, it does shut off...

78 + ceiling fan + pedestal fan blowing on me = win

I've been turning our air down to 70 at about 6 AM. Have the wife turn it up to 80 at 10 AM. The house stays under 80 degrees until about 8 PM. We start to cool it back down to 76 at 11 PM, once the outside temp has dropped a little.

77 from when I leave until I get home. Then down to 74. It turns off except that day we had 102+ and it wouldn't go below 76.

I occasionally spray my outside coils down with a sprinkler. It helps reduce head pressure and promotes cooling. Our a/c unit at work had this done as well and the building cooled amazingly quick.
