OK, so I got a new heat pump system installed. It works great. It is a badass. That said, I have now found something I don't like about it. It makes my cold air return sound like a jet engine. The air handler itself is very quiet, but the sound of the air passing through the vent and louvers is very annoying. Is there anything I can do to eliminate/decrease this noise? I know that making the return bigger would help, but that is not an option. Thoughts?

Any way to run a second return? I'm assuming that you can't go bigger due to wall space issues, but you are going to have the problem until you figure out a way to relieve some the pressure. Upflow or down?

Take off the vent and see if that makes a difference.
Might check at Lowes and see if they have vents with larger slots instead
of trying to force all the air through small slots like a harmonica.

We have that same furnace... It's been repaired at least twice. I have them do maintenance on it twice a year and it may not last much longer. We moved in here in 02. My mom was going to help buy us a new one but she had to go into a nursing home so she can't do it now.

Yeah, it's an upflow and the location of the unit makes it impossible to add a second return. I'm going to try a different cover first. If that doesn't cure it, I'll have to do some wall surgery (last resort) and make the opening bigger.

read the manual on your air handler, if you have a variable speed blower, there are dipswitches you can set to slow it down. wish i could help more but i have only been doing hvac for 4 months, and got laid off last week.

Is the air handler in a closet, can you get pics to me I'm sure we can up with something if changing the grill doesn't work.
