    Before....

    After a few slight changes...

After I put it all together, I just couldn't bring myself to painting it camo. It looked just too good all dressed in black to change a thing. I don't like all the added weight with the bi-pod up front so it might be only used for display purposes and sighting in the scope.

Very nice, but I gotta admit that an M1A in a walnut stock is pretty handsome to begin with. Is that a Scout/Squad model? Curious about the scope mount, what type of mount is that and are you happy with it? I almost bought an M1A recently but went with a PTR91 (with a rail) since it was a bit more scope friendly. I still think there is an M1A in my future....

I would have left it alone. I like the traditional look much better. Too many AR style stocks on non AR rifles, such as yours, I also do not care for them on AK's either.
Just my opinion, I have 2 very nice M1A's both with walnut stocks.

I really like that original stock. What are you planning to do with it?

I'll be keeping it. I want to be able to switch back and forth depending on what mood I'm in.

Yes it is. I like the looks of the old Bush rifle so I removed the scout mount and installed a vented hand guard. I prefer the receiver mount so I went with a Basset low picatinny mount because of it's reputation among M14 users and it's unique quick on/off capability leaving me the ability to still use the irons if I prefer.

I would have left it alone. I like the traditional look much better.

I used to think this also and still do love the look of wood on classic military rifles but I do like to change into lighter clothes every so often. That is one reason I chose the Vltor stock for those days when I want the "evil black" look. When I get the urge to return to the classic look, it only takes a few minutes to get her back into her walnut attire.

Very nice looking. +1! Did you happen to take any in process pics?

What all did you do with it?

Not too much involved in the process. The simplicity of the takedown is part of the beauty of the M1A. Open up the trigger guard, pull out the trigger assembly and pull the rest right out of the stock in one piece. Takes about 1 minute to have the rifle stripped down and out of the stock. I removed the current hand guard and scout scope rail and stuck on a vietnam era vented hand guard then re-assembled everything into the Vltor stock. No major modifying (new Sadlak spring guide) or alteration needed for the whole process. If you don't count the time I took to grease and oil everything while I had it apart, the entire disassembly/reassemble could easily have been done in less that a half hour (including the removal of the rail and hand guard).

Wish I hadn't sold my E2 stock, never figured I'd end up getting an M1A, but then I did. Gosh darn it to heck.
