I have been looking at the new Smith and Wesson Pro Series 1911 Sub Compact with the 3" barrel. I was looking at the Kimber Ultra Carry up to this point but have read a few articles about the S&W and I am very interested. I have owned a S&W in the past and know that they have some of the best customer service I have encountered. I also know that when you think of 1911, Kimber is now one of the first brands mentioned however I have heard mixed reviews about their customer service. I am interested in the external extractor and what it can do. Any information on this topic would be much appreciated.

I've had 3 Kimbers now with zero problems so I really can't speak to a CS problem, since I've never needed them. I've shot a S&W fullsize 1911 once and it seemed to be a good shooting gun. Felt smooth and was very accurate. I think you will be happy with either one of them.

I've had two pre series II Kimbers for many years, and I never had to use their customer service. I had to replace some parts that I lost off of another shooters' S&W, and S&W replaced them for free. Hard to beat that kind of service.

    Shoot 'em both and decide.

Yep... I had a rusted screw that I couldn't find a replacement for to go in my S&W grips. When I called their customer service, they didn't have it either because they don't use those stock grips anymore...so they sent me a pair of new grips. No charge, no shipping...less than three days.

The S&W is of course a fine gun. That being said, I have had the Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry for several years and love it. Both are going to do fine, just go with your gut and get the one you want.

I have owned S&W, Sig and Kimber. I now own four Kimbers. In my book the 1911 cannot be beaten by anything else currently available. I have fired over two hundred thousand rounds through my oldest Kimber. New springs and barrel after 170,000 rounds. Never needed customer service for that model (Custom II), the 3" has around 12,000 rounds through it. I had a frame issue, repaired and back in a week with free shooting glasses. I was reimbursed for shipping and everything. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. Most of my friends have Kimber now, still can't out shoot me, but when they bought a Kimber they started getting closer. Cold bore Quarter shot at 25 yrds. First time every time.
