Maybe need to pattern your shotgun and see if there's a hole in the middle of it.

because I shoot with a bunch of guys where if they hit a left over chip it takes me out of the game

Yes, that should work, as said early pattern your shotgun. For that game you are playing (piece and protect) I use full choke so as not to leave large pieces for others to break.

Portable throwers are notorious for not giving "smoky" breaks, because they don't spin the target as fast. If it still happens when you shoot off an electric trap, you probably just need more choke.
