Where are good places to find Knife Steel?

I'm thinking I want to give one a shot, but still thinking about which steel I want. I'm looking for something at least 1/4" thick, at least 3" wide and probably at least 18" long.

If you ever have a reason to go near the Chicago area, stop by Admiral Steel in Alsip, IL and pick it up there. You'll save a fortune on shipping. Doesn't make sense for a special trip but in case you're there it's worth it.

I checked their site and couldn't find the thickness and widths for steels that I was looking at.

Yep, that's who I would order from.

I have a feeling, you might get to help :):

There's a boutique steel manufacturer in Greenwood - just west of the corner of Main & 31.

Who knows if they'll have what you want - especially in a small quantity. But might be worth a call!

Thanks for the link. I've been toying with building a knife lately (actually for years, but have never gotten around to it). My project won't be near as ambitious as OneBadV8's, though, at least not in size.

    :dunno:

Sometimes smaller things require more precision. I'm just trying to cut down on that so hopefully it'll be less skill :D

Anyone know of a place local that might do Heat Treat for such an animal? Or maybe a rough estimate of what it might cost to send off?

I was thinking that a smaller blade would require somewhat less material removal since I'll be doing it with hand tools. I don't want to throw a bunch of money into it if I find I don't want to build any more (although I doubt that'll be the case). I don't expect it to turn out horribly well, I just want to get a feel for it.
