THAT can get you into Harvard? I've heard post-tornado interviews that were more coherent.

Empty-headed morons from the Ivy League like that are running this government. I'd rather pick a government at random from INGO than the current Harvard-Yale axis.

    Where's the bacon?
    Never happen, Kirk.

Most of the people that would actually do some good in government understand that when you get down and roll around in the mud with the pigs, both you and they get dirty, but the pigs like it.

    Blessings,

This is why those that want to be there shouldn't be there, and why those that should be there have little or no desire to go.

That, and most of the people you'd pick would never want to have "politician" or even "former politician" on their resume. It'd be like an old shame :D

Adam sounds a little socialist to me. He doesn't tolerate force, including market force, against other people? He's looking for a peaceful sustainable society? I don't think Awlaki was killed for exercising his 1st A rights (which he didn't have in Yemen anyway), was he?

I was hearing a little of Ralph Nader there. WHOA.:n00b:

He doesn't tolerate the INITIATION of force. Big difference. He is an adamant supporter of RKBA and it's intended purpose.

He is also a former Marine with combat experience, you probably wouldn't want to test that incorrect assumption on him :):

As to the second part, are you kidding me, an American has a RIGHT to free speech no matter their geographical location. True the government of YEMEN may not recognize it, but the US government must. Their is no "unless you aren't in the physical boundaries of the US" clause in the Constitution.

The only 'crimes' he committed (that we know of) were 'thought' crimes. As of now, we have no evidence, let alone even allegations, that he was planning anything, or helped to plan anything.

Was he a *&** bag? Yes. Can you murder someone for being a $***bag? You can if your name is Barry O'.

    -------------

I would love to live in a peaceful society where no one initiated force and we all lived by consent and voluntarily engaged in whatever endeavors we wanted to. Imagine how nice it would be to live and conduct you life without coercion and threats of violence?

It's an ideal goal, even though we know it is unattainable, on the whole.

Thanks for the answer about Adam, I appreciate knowing that.

I am intrigued that people are standing up for Alkawi's 1st A rights, but I would say his speech went to the extent of giving aid and comfort to the enemy, in this case Al-Qaeda. That would seem about as close to yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater as you can get.

And there are thought crimes that the US does punish, or has punished. I remember when employment applications asked if you were a member of the Communist Party. There is still a federal act on the books making it an offense to advocate overthrowing the US government, or belonging to an organization that advocates that goal. People are still arrested from time to time for 'seditious conspiracy', as recently as last year apparently.

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the world to become a peaceful harmonious place. If that ever happens I suspect it's going to look like a combination of the UN and the People's Republic of China, or like something out of 1984.

I do not believe we are supposed to hold McCarthyism up as a model of what we will permit the government to do.

The employment form stuff was long after McCarthyism. (I'm not THAT old.) And the Smith Act (1940, or pre-McCarthy) is still on the books. The sedition prosecutions by and large are not anti-Communist.

The laws are still in place, and not specific to Communism. This in addition to the post-9/11 change in civil liberties.

Anyway, off topic by this point...

The logic is the same. There are certain beliefs that "we" hold to be permissible, and if you support X and Y and Z you must be some kind of subversive influence. It predates McCarthy by millenia: leaders and cultures the world over have had their own brand of that sort of persecution. I use McCarthyism because I think most here know about it.

It doesn't matter if a law is used to attack "the Reds" or "the terrorists" or "the right-wing/left-wing paramilitary nutjobs", the idea that the government can arrest a man merely for belonging to a group or espousing a certain belief is simply unconstitutional.

And, yeah, we are. I'm sure someone will be along to correct the flow soon enough ;)

Arresting someone for a thought crime is a far cry from assassinating them for it.

    Are you paraphrasing Bill Buckley?
