I can't find any primers. Powder is hard to find. I don't know if I want to spend the money for the reloading equipment if I can't find the other stuff. I've called all over the Indy area, checked online, nobody has anything anymore. And nobody knows when they will get them in stock again.
go ahead and jump in. the components will come available again. you can also order them online from many suppliers. Just remember that a hazmat fee applies to powder and primers so order enough to make paying the fee worthwhile. If I didn't drive by 2 or 3 Cabela's on a regular basis, I would be trying to get some other friendly reloaders together for a bulk order.
It takes a little while to learn where to find components, but they are readily available. It helps if you buy in bulk, but you can even find stuff in shops relatively locally. Try Acme Sports, they usually have stuff. Much as I hate to recommend them, Cosner's in Bedford also has plenty of stuff.
I have bought some types of powders and all my primers at Gander Mountain both at Castleton and Greenwood. They didn't have all of the powders I was looking for though. I had to go online for them. Stick with it. You will have a good sense of pride when you shoot your first reloads.
Well I'm called plainfield shooting supplies. They have a full stock of small primers. $35 for a thousand. I'm going to head over there this week to get some.
Many components are easy to find, Some are harder. I have had no trouble locating anything but Win 231. Most of the other powders can be had, and primers can be found. My problem if finding everything I want at the same place so I can pay 1 hazmat fee.
welcome to reloading. believe it or not its 2x easier to find components now than it was this time last year, and 3x easier than 18 months ago. to stock up on primers check the group buy comming up. i cant remember the exact price but its about 20-25 per thousand for cci primers. im going to bet you wont find 20 dollar per thousand primers at the 1500
Check out the Atterbury range. They have many different powders in 1lb and 8lb cans. Primers of each size are available. The prices are very reasonable.
It was great meeting you in the store the other day! Wish I hadn't gotten called away to help another customer, I would have showed you the powder we have. Both Universal, and Clays. Either is suitable for handgun reloading, especially Universal. For primers try Pearson Sporting Goods in Marshall. It's about a 20 minute drive for me, which makes it less than an hour for you. Don't know for sure he has any, but it's always worth a call. Last I heard, Plainfield Shooting Supply had some, also.
+1 for the advice on buying in bulk. Two things that I do:
1. If I can't find what I am looking for I set my money aside and keep adding to it. That way when something does become available I can buy a lot of it.
2. Set aside a portion of your purchase for shortages. I like to buy 2, store 1. But even if you just took a hundred pack out of each box of primers you opened that would give you a nice little reserve to carry you through shortages.
Number one thing is to be patient. Shortages come and go. Locate all the little mom and pop gun shops in your area and keep searching online. You'll turn up what you need eventually.
Placed my order for 8 pounds Monday. Also have some 4756, 2400, and 3031 on the same order, just to take advantage of the hazmat fee. I should be set for a while.
