I have borrowed a nice little Winchester 'Ranger' model 120 20g youth pump shotgun for my son to shoot during the upcoming youth weekend.

How can I confirm it is not tapered barrel, and that it's ok for a slug?

The loud end of the barrel is 0.600" diam. The barrel says its for 2.75" and 3" shells. It's a smooth bore, no rifling grooves.

I'd rather not have to buy a barrel to find out that it will not accommodate a slug. :):

    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Based on the info in the BoreMaster page, looks like a 0.600" is a MOD or IMP MOD choked barrel.

Now I'm even more hesitant about shooting a slug down this barrel.

    Thanks for the link!

Rifled slugs are fine through improved or modified chokes, or even full chokes though they often won't shoot well through full chokes.

It's getting late in the game to try to find a barrel with rifle sights, so I'd get a set of sights that attaches to the rib, asssuming your barrel has one, and go shoot it. You won't harm an IC or modified barrel with rifled slugs.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot and see how it goes. ;-)

To be clear, you're talking about a fixed choke barrel and not a barrel that accepts choke tubes, correct? If so, you're good to go. If the barrel does take tubes, try some with the modified tube and some with the IC and see which shoots best.

Should be able to shoot slugs through any barrel or choke.

If you had changeable choke inserts (I know you don't) an Improved Cylinder is supposed to function the best with slugs.
