Ya, that is kind of odd. Why make an entire article pro-gun citing how a gun owner was not at fault, then at the end of the article ask for mandatory training for gun owners? Makes no sense..

While I would support firearms training for school kids I think the most logical thing to do would be to mandate training for...um...the police? You know, the ones whose job it is to actually enforce those laws.

    :dunno:

And yes, Kirk, I know YOU know that. I was aiming that comment at the person who wrote that ultimately illogical article.

yep his last point doesn't make sense when his whole article is how about non-gun owners and police don't know the laws and the gun owners do. How about we make a required high school class called national firearms law and require everyone to take it.:D

After seeing the way some people handle there weapons, is training a bad thing?.

Yes - at least the government mandated type.

The problem becomes "who gets to decide on the extentr of training?" Then you know there has to be a way to decide if someone passes or fails if it is to be at all meaningful. Who decides what the passing requirement is?

There is no reason for us to take that chance. It's not like Hoosiers are dropping like flies from gun accidents. It's a solution in search of a problem.

What about the Texas system of CHL training? What's the consensus on that.

And most definitely the police should know the law.

    Trainng the public

My kids (2 girls) have been trained in handgun safety and have learned to respect them. They are not afraid of seeing someone carry openly. The ones who are frightened by the sight of a handgun on another person are in the ignorant and prejudiced.

Given all the media frenzy about crazed gunmen, it is not surprising that many in the public would be unnerved by the sight of an exposed gun.
Look at how many people freak out at the sight of a mother breast-feeding in public.
    IC 16-35-6-1
    Right to breastfeed
Sec. 1. Notwithstanding any other law, a woman may breastfeed her child anywhere the woman has a right to be.
Maybe we need a statute like that for open carry?

Mostly favorable article except at the very end... he acknowledges that the public is unaware of Indiana gun laws, and even that the police don't necessarily know them...

...and his solution is to make mandatory training for gun owners?

I believe you posted in the comments section of the Evansville article of TF's incident correct? It's very sad how many people claim to carry a gun and dont know the laws at all isnt it?

    Man...

What about mandatory classes in order for us to exercise our Freedom of Speech?

What about mandatory classes in order for us to practice/have Freedom of Religion?

    See how this works?

If you have mandatory classes for a certain inalienable right, why not institute mandatory classes for all of 'em, right?

Slippery slope, people. A very dangerous slippery slope riddled with broken glass & razor blades and a big pool of rubbing alcohol at the bottom.

I don't live in Texas so I have no real information on their training standards but just because another state has training requirements doesn't mean we should.

Those training requirements may work for them...FOR NOW...it doesn't mean that they aren't going to be subject to "gravity" (a la the slippery slope phenomenon) at a later time.

Why take the chance if there is no real discernable benefit?

Do you think that "Suzy Soccermom" would suddenly be OK with seeing an OC gun just because she knew that IN required training? It hasn't been that way in those states that require it. Why do you think it would be different here?

Training is great, most of us highly encourage it. :yesway:

Mandatory training to qualify for permission to practice an already infringed right... not so much. :noway:

Those who take responsibility will seek out the knowledge. It wouldn't help the irresponsible much at all.
