I've been looking for a Smith Model 625-7 in 45 Colt, 6.5" Lew Horton Powerport for about four years now. They very rarely come up for sale as there were only 308 ever made and I've lost out on the last two I've seen. About three weeks ago, one crossed my radar and I bought it for myself as a birthday present. Not sure if I'll ever shoot it or whether it'll just be a collectors piece, but I finally have one of my few true "grail guns" in the safe.

It feels beefier than my 629 6". Perhaps it's the grips. It's a truly massive handgun, 1/2" longer than a standard full underlug.

Next on the list is a Lew Horton Smith 629 3" Carry Comp, (1 of 428) but I've never seen one for sale. Who knows?

Anyway, enjoy this beauty with me.

Also, in the course of research, I found out that odd numbers, 625-5, 625-7 are 45 Colt and even numbers, 625-6 etc are 45 ACP. Easy way to tell caliber by number.

yes i had others....had a 2 625-5 one 6" and the other was 4" and 2 625-6's with presentation cases .....all were sold + 36 other guns to pay for 30 acres of ground i bought....

    i still have a 625PD 2" 625-8 JM 4" and a 1918 S&W DA 45

I don't know anything about collectable guns, but here's what I'd do with it

I’m no collector, all my guns get shot, I’d shoot it, but then again, my grail guns are a lot lower priced guns… unless I won a lottery, then there would be signs….

    So, @WebSnyper, @ghitch75, @Magyars, @MrSmitty and @Creedmoor -

I did it. I couldn't let it sit in the safe for another day, and nature got the best of me. Took the beauty out to the pistol range. It shoots like a sledgehammer, even with 250gn lead FPs. One big a** blaster of a revolver.

So worth it. Now off to watch some dumb cop movie from the 80's. I'm feeling the need for some revolver cinema. :-)

That's an absolutely beauty, and good on you for shooting it! A 3" version of that gun (without the comp) is a personal grail gun of mine...I love the .45 Colt. Thank for the info on the odd dash numbers being the .45 Colt vs evens being .45 ACP...I did not know that before today!
