What this man has had to carry. It is the part of self defense you cannot truly prepare for or understand until it happens to you. I cannot wait to read the rest.

They took all his guns?!?!?! Is that legal? It seems to me it would be pretty easy to figure out which gun was used to stop the assault...why would they take all the guns in the house? I would be calling up some friends to send me a loaner for sure in this situation...never know if the guy has any friends that may want to exact revenge.
Does anyone know if that is standard protocol when investigating a possible self-defense shooting?

Reading the prosecutors ruling: "At this point, Mr. Dykehouse grabbed his legally registered .40 caliber handgun and went to investigate."

Do they have handgun registration in MI?

Yes. However, the handgun registration is called a "safety inspection".

That is incorrect. Safety inspections were eliminated four years ago (repeal signed into law by gov in 2008). You no longer have to take your handgun into the police station. We currently do have handgun registration (just mail in a form), but there is a bill in the Senate to repeal this, too. The House has already passed this. I expect this to also be signed into law, finally eliminating handgun registration in MI.

The pull quote from Part 5 should be:

Some of the worst things happened in the nicest neighborhoods. You don’t have to live on the poor side of town to be a victim of a violent crime.

    Something we all should remember.
