Ya'll got it all wrong...

The firing pin strikes the primer, igniting the powder and forcing the projectile down the barrel.

From there everything happens so fast it's hard to see, but here is what happens:
The projectile exits the barrel, causing severe devastation and destruction comparable to no other.
