I don't think you can go wrong with either one. But it does seem like the majority of people go with the 870.

    Heres what I was told.

For pump shotguns, go Rem 870
    For auto, go with Benelli.

The main differences between the Rem and the Mossburg are that the Rem has a wholly steel receiver whereas the Mossburg has an aluminum chassis with steel inserts where it counts.

The position of the safety is on the tang on the Mossburg, on the trigger gaurd of the Rem.

It's also my understanding that it's rather difficult to add a mag. extension to a Mossburg model due to the way that the mag cap / front barrel lug work together. I've not looked into that too much, though.

Other than that... Buy which ever you want! You can find almost perfect condition used 870s for $250... Same condition Mburgs for $200. "Tactical" models will command more money.

The 870 is the Barbie doll of shotguns. You can find loads of useless crap to hang on them. Not saying they are bad, just that the aftermarket is unbelivable, The mossy is a close 2nd. Check out the Mossberg 590A1 line. They are Milspec purpose built fighting pumps. Also they are heavy as hell! i have one its next to my bed every night. If you run out of ammo you can beat the bad guys down with it. Id post pics but i dont have a camera. Also check out the Benelli Nova line, my uncle has a Supernova and its a real nice italian machine and its in the same price range as both the mossy and rem. CZ and FN make super fine shotguns also if you want to go semi auto.

I picked up an 870 with the +2 factory mag extension for $350 after tax last year. I think they're a fairly solid gun, and I would recommend one. Gun shows seem to be a great place to buy. If you're around Madison County you're welcome to come shoot mine, if you'd like to try and get a feel for one.

I have a Mossberg 500 and love it, I believe the Military uses/used the Mossy 500 for it's pump action shotgun needs as well. There are accessories aplenty for both, some prefer the safety location on one of the other. Either will serve you fine, I can say myself that I have used a Mossberg 500 for years now and never had a problem. In rain, sleet, snow, mud, you name it. :yesway:

seriously though, what does the 870 offer over the 500?
Chicks. Chicks dig 870's and in particular they seem to like this one. I call it Lil' Bit*h. My GF likes my boomstick.

Same gun in both pics, second pic is current configuration for it. If you can get to Indy go to Tacticalshotgunner.com shop on the East side and finger a few guns. They kinda do shotguns. Most of the accesories in the second picture came from them. Anything you see in the pics, besides the old Hastings barrel, they carry.

Can't go wrng with either the Remmy 870 or the Mossy 500.
I have a Mossy 500 12ga. that I am more than happy with. I also have an 870 clone that I like as well. I personally prefer the Mossy myself. Go with what feels best to you, both are great guns. :ingo:

The shotgun you linked to in the original post has a pistol grip; pistol grips, and Mossbergs just don't go together, due to the safety placement. If you want a pistol grip buttstock, definitely go with the 870. Mine is an 870 tactical with speedfeed IV pistol grip stock, Wilson 2 round mag extension, and elzetta light mount/magazine clamp.

Head down to Tactical Shotgunner in Downtown Indy! 2621 Shelby St. Indianapolis 46203 Or give them a call at 317-787-7200 They are extremely knowledgable and will help you make a descision based on what you want to be able to do with the shotgun. I picked up my 870 from them last year with some accessories on the cheap. I recommend them every chance I get!!

I believe someone just posted an 870 in the forums for a decent price, if it is still available...

Remington and Mossberg both make reliable shotguns... If you buy a Mossberg, make sure you get one with the magazine capacity that you want.

You want my advice? no.. well I will give it anyway.

I have been down the "tactical shotgun" route, and it leads to .... douchebagville.

I now own and shoot a

    Remington 870 Wingmaster w/ 30" full choke barrel, 28" skeet barrel = $169 dollars
Bought Speedfeed Forend and the R3 recoil pad stock I like = $100
    Bought Choate extension = $40

Cut barrel down, use mid bead on vent rib for sighting, its light, fast, and SMOOOTH like butter.

Dont put pistol grips on your shotgun, shoot it like a shotgun.

    That is my advice.

My shotgun looks very much like this, other than its blued.

And has a CDM flashlight mount.
