google and these things seem to pop up (DOWN?) a lot in Guatemala. What makes them so round and deep?

2007 there was one 330 feet deep. Taller than the AUL building. Just GONE.

It's a sinkhole, and a particularly large one. They happen when there is an open cavern underground (often due to underground water) that collapses for one reason or another- usually unexpectedly. Simetimes they are even man made when a water pipe bursts underground. There have been much smaller ones in Indiana.

    Wikipedia article for more info.

    S.E. of disorder
Typically caused by receding groundwater. Central America is typically limestone groundrock. As the water tables are lowered by whatever fashion the ceiling of underground caverns are no longer supported and will eventually collapse. I've been diving in the cenotes in Mexico and it's pretty cool to come into an area where the ceiling has collapsed. There's usually a large pyramid of debris that matches the shape of the ceiling of the cave and then sometimes a hole in the ceiling where a shaft of light comes thru. The ones I've been in had ceiling holes no bigger than 5 feet in diameter. I saw the biggest damned spider I'd ever seen in one of those caverns. Made me glad we were on scuba and could just submerge and swim away from it!
