A defense contractor based in southern Indiana denies that it told an employee to approve machine gun parts that didn't pass quality inspections and fired him after he complained. Dugger-based Northside Machine Co. denied those allegations in federal court documents filed Wednesday.
Andrew T. Pool accused the company of falsifying records sent to the government and defense contractor FN Manufacturing in a whistleblower lawsuit. FN Manufacturing is not accused of any wrongdoing.
A 2006 survey of troops that use one of the guns the parts were made for found 30 percent complained that the M249 gun failed to fire in combat. But military experts have declined to comment on whether such failures might be linked to substandard parts.
