How close are we to the following situation? A guy in the UK posted a picture of himself on Facebook with a "automatic" and now he's in prison for 5 years because fellow citizens turned him in?

Here's the prize quote from the article
Det Chief Insp Reed added: 'What does a normal member of society need with a firearm? 'When we looked at his computer, we discovered he had an unhealthy interest in firearms.

There is a lot wrong with that article. First, it's clearly a semi-auto, not an automatic. Secondly, they go on about how it was "illegaly converted to fire 8mm ammo" when it is clearly stamped on the slide as an 8mm weapon.

But that's just reporters getting things wrong as normal. I find it fascinating that having pictures of guns on your computer is now showing an "unhealthy interest." Really? Are the Brits going to start raiding people's computers, looking for gun porn? I can just see some high-speed detective posing as a gun enthusiast, lurking in forums to trap unwary people thinking unclean thoughts about firearms....

well sadly thats what you get when you allow a government to rule its people instead of a people ruling its government. our government is already too powerful and unless we start doing drastic things (electing representation to change the laws) then we will be there where the UK is within 20 years or less, if our country even last that long. our government is ready to implode because of corruption and lack of listening to the peoples voices.

rediculous, 5 years for a pistol. id bust him out of prison if i was his buddy

It's not any different than here in the US. If you post a photo of yourself engaged in illegal activity, the police may have PC to investigate. In the UK, possession of a firearm is a criminal act. He wasn't arrested for a Facebook photo, he was arrested for criminal possession.

yep your right about the PC scutter. the government will use ANY means neccessary EVEN ILLEGAL if they can get away with it, to find out what your doing wrong, if anything. like Thomas Jefferson basicly said: government needs to fear THE PEOPLE not the people fearing the government!! we need to find the way to once again make the government at every level afraid of law abiding citizens.

Not disputing that. I'm mocking the UK for taking away their citizens' God given rights.

well they didnt stand up for their rights, so they lost them. got what they earned. if they want them back then they need to elect politicians to get them back. but as long as they have a bunch of hippie bleeding heart type citizens that would rather follow the "massa" around and obey his every whim, then i dont see it changing. our citizens are getting soft too, and we need to wake them up, before the tree hugging libbies try to keep pushing harder and end up starting a revolutionary war again

I hope, in 5 years, I get to read the story about how the guy that went to prison got out and shot dead everyone involved with his going to prison, including the cowardly snitch that turned him in. To me, that would be a good read.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating violence nor illegal activity. I'm just merely stating opinion on my preferencial reading materials.

LMAO. yep totaly understandable if he did, but would still then be used as propeganda by the anti-gun nuts. just like they called our countries founders rebels and such. just like they call us sportsmen "rednecks" in not a good way. just like all of us who shoot for enjoyment are radicals. government discredits any who oppose them and then they look like superheros, lol, so sad that people are so gullable and dumb. even all of the ones who agree with me and others on here when we make bold politicaly correct statements wont stand up themselves and say it or do anything about it. sad that a lot of people are closet patriots until they feel like there s a large enough group that they can blend into without being seen. (i know people agree because everytime i make a statement that pisses all the cops off or calls out the government, i get more possitive rep than if i had just saved a baby from drowning, lol) but too many of you are afraid to do it yourselves. try it!!! it feels good to tell the truth, or to say something that isnt politically correct!! its liberating. its American!

The Fed's are going after Blackwater for weapons violations now. Apparently they were storing some weapons for the local sheriffs office and someone took offense.

but how did they know he was even in the UK when the photo was taken? I don't think they could have found that out without abusing his civil rights, in some fashion!

We don't know anything about what happened. Maybe the police just knocked on his door and asked him if he had a gun. I'm not prepared to sit here and armchair-quarterback the actions of the arresting officers based on the scant information in an article that we already know to be inaccurate.

That said, I'm not trying to make any commentary about the police's comments about firearm ownership, or any possible rights violations. I'm just saying we have no idea how the investigation went down or what other information they may or may not have had.

i can't seem to find these 8mm handgun ammo

Really? Because two seconds on Google turned up 8×27mm French Ord. and 8mm Nambu. Still, the pistol in that picture looks like a PPK replica designed to fire 8mm blanks (a starter pistol), and would explain why the article says it was "an imitation pistol, illegally converted to fire 8mm bullets and capable of killing". Regardless, my point was that it was unlikely that it was converted to shoot 8mm Mauser.
