DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0

If you know what the title means, then this question is for you.

I am getting cable internet. I need a modem/router. My download speed will be limited to 30mbps. As far as I can tell the docsis 2.0 will run at 38mbps, and unless my math has failed me, that should be good enough. I don't want to spend the extra $50 to get a 3.0 if I don't have to. If anyone knows, please help.

You are WAY overthinking it.

Seriously. The chokepoint is NOT going to be your modem.

Grab a modem that is reported to be reliable and go for it.

Motorolas have a great reputation.

I have used dozens of them in past, only had issues with a few.

Insight offers 30 and 50 mbps speeds, but despite the fact that DOCSIS 2.0 will go up to 38mbps, their 30 network requires a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

The explanation i recived from tech support is, that they have plenty of open frequencies, and so DOCSIS 2 and DOCSIS 3 networks are on seperate channels, and keeping 30mbps customers on the DOCSIS 3.0 network keeps them from choking out the 10 and 20 mbps customers

I would go that route, as I am NOT a fan of "all in one" type of devices.

DOCSIS 3.0 is backwards compatible to 2.0, so unless you are trying to pinch pennies, just get the 3.0 modem

Its my understanding that channel bonding is part of the 3.0 standard

Not only will it allow you to use the same router if you decide to upgrade, I only pay for 20mbps, and run at least 30 most of the time, I've seen much higher. I have the Motorola as well, works perfectly. But if you do wireless, and are not hard wired, make sure you get a wireless router that is capable of those speeds as well, otherwise its all a waste anyway.
