Yesterday, a public hearing for the conference committee on Senate Bill 229 was held at the Indiana Statehouse. The conference committee report will likely be finalized soon and SB 229 will be sent to the Senate and House floors for a final vote. Please contact your state Senator and Representative IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urge them to vote “YES” on SB 229. With the 2014 session of the Indiana General Assembly likely ending tomorrow, SB 229 will need to be voted on today or tomorrow.
Sponsored by state Senator Jim Tomes (R-49) and state Representative Sean Eberhart (R-57), SB 229 as amended would do the following:

    • Prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to fund a gun “buyback” program

    • Allow firearms to be locked out of plain sight in a vehicle while parked on school property

    • Remove the “roaming school zone” provision from current law – currently, property can be defined as a place where a school function is taking place (i.e. a person would be in violation of state law if they were legally carrying a firearm at a zoo and a school field trip was being held there as well)

    • Redefine “school property” to only include property of the school and not other buildings that might be connected to the school by a parking lot
Please contact your state Senator and Representative IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urge them to SUPPORT the conference report for SB 229.

Done and done, but bumped up top again for those that haven't opened the other thread encouraging people to contact the conferees, advisers and leaders of the House and Senate on this Bill.

Just got this update from my Se, Jim Arnold (D) and voted in favor:
    Guns on school property
Controversial legislation gained approval that will now allow individuals who legally possess a firearm to keep it in a motor vehicle parked in a school parking lot as long as the firearm is locked in the vehicle out of plain sight. Under current law, it is a felony to possess a firearm on school property. However, with the passage of SEA 229, this penalty is eliminated as long as the firearm is locked in the trunk, glove box or out of plain sight in the vehicle. If persons in legal possession of a firearm leave the firearm in plain view in the vehicle while on school property, they would be charged with a Class A misdemeanor.
In addition, SB 229 allows law enforcement agencies to sell confiscated firearms to the general public at auction. Only individuals who are lawfully allowed to own firearms could make purchases. Proceeds from these sales would be used by the agency for the purchase or maintenance of firearms, ammunition, protective vests, and other law enforcement equipment. Another provision provides that a firearm scheduled to be destroyed be sold to a salvage company where it can be dismantled for parts, scrap metal, recycling, or for resale as parts for other firearms.
