what is the best product/method for removing small patches of surface rust from a barrel? I tried a cloth and remy oil and didnt work well.

Its not deep, minimal rust but not sure of the best way to get it off and not damage the barrel.

    Thanks in advance

Here's a Brownell's video on fixing light rust on a gun for people who like to see things:

Brownells - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories and Gunsmithing Tools

It's a good idea to start with the least agressive methods and work your way up to what works.

    1. Hoppes with a rag.
    2. Flitz with a rag.
    3. 0000 (FOUR ought) steel whole w/various solvents/oils/pressures.
    4. Bad pitting requires more agressive methods.

    That would be my progression.

    trust me on the Gunbright,

Steel wool will likely mess your finish up if you over do it even slightly.
Me and the guys use this stuff in the shop all the time. Guys are always bringing in buggered up guns to trade. We use this stuff to clean them up and you would be amazed at the kind of rust we've pulled off guns with it and still had bluing underneath.
Due to your post I finally got off my ass and contacted the company so we will be getting some of it in here within the next couple of weeks.
