Not really a collector. Got some 8X56mmR Austrian with Nazi headstamp. Some Nazi 7.92X33mm. Some Jap 6.5X50.5mm and Jap 7.7 Hotchkiss. Some 1950's .22 Remington and Winchester ammo. Old .303 and Egyptian 7.92X57mm. Odds and ends I've run across over the years...

I'd have to make a list, but I bet there's 60 rifle and about 80 pistol.
I've got something bigger than a 20mm all the way down to a .22 short. A couple of pin fires. A shotgun shell that's smaller dia. than a 410 and about half as long, I was told it's what they used to take birds for museums.

I've been wanting to put something together for a while. Other than asking people you kow, how do you go about aquiring a single round for a caliber you don't have?

    How do you display them?

I got a lot of mine buying loose/mixed ammo at gun shows.

Oh, just remembered I had 6.5x55 Swede and .22 Hornet as well.

I have my favorites on MTM cartridge boards http://www.amazon.com/MTM-CBD-1-40-Cartridge-Display-Board/dp/B001UPT03M of course a bit expensive to display everything on them.

Most rounds I've got just sitting in a box. Not quite ideal. I also collect headstamp variations and I just put those in the MTM plastic cartridge boxes.

Some guys find old type set letter trays and stand the rounds up in those. Hard to keep them from falling over without wiring them in place, but that's kind of ugly seeing the wire over the front of the case. Others have drilled holes in the sides of the case and wired them on in that way. Heavily frowned upon to damage the cases in this way. Don't glue them to the display boards either.

I've half got the idea that maybe they could have the base pressed into a wax strip on a display board. I don't think the wax would cause corrosion or anything.

    I-get-around
I've been wanting to put something together for a while. Other than asking people you kow, how do you go about aquiring a single round for a caliber you don't have?

    How do you display them?

For the first question I have three good answers/sources
    1. gunshows - buy mixed cigar boxes of odds-n-ends (hope you get a few you need and trade/sell the rest) or buy from collector cartridge dealers or fellow collectors (I sometimes bring my extras to gunshows when I have a table).
    2. Gunbroker - shipping ammo is EXPENSIVE, but it is good for rare items or if you want to buy a big variety from a single seller (really helps to spread out the shipping cost among 10, 20, or more cartridges)
    3. dedicated collector cartridge dealer websites - again, shipping ammo is EXPENSIVE, same circumstances as #2 above will help make the shipping cost easier to bear.

Personally, I would like to recommend Gary Reusze of ColCart, Inc. A knowledgeable collector and veteran based right here in Indiana who sells on Gunbroker, a few local gunshows (Crown Point in particular), and on his own website Home

For your second question, I'm still struggling with how best to display my cartridges even after 15 years of collecting and I'm sorry to say that I do not have any good advice...in fact, none of my cartridges are on display right now. I still collect, but got tired of struggling with different display methods. I'll go back to displaying them once (if?) I ever figure out a good way (no falling over or rolling around, no glue or wire, space efficient, cost effective, etc.).

I usally ask around and mention I'm collecting, and sometimes im given some rounds. Other than that I ask at gun shows and usally some ammo stands will have "partials" and will sell a round or two.

Right now now I just have them setup on my book shelf in a line, but I'm tempted to get those MTM display cases. Your collection may grow quick!! Mine sure did and it's addicting!!

PS pm me I might have some rounds I can ship you

I have a collection of sorts. It would be nice if we could set up some kind of exchange. For example you would post your extra cartridges you want to offer as trade and then list what you are looking for. Something like that anyhow. :dunno:

If there were sufficient interest, it could probably be made into a subtopic of the WTS/WTT forum. Or we could organize an INGO cartridge exchange "convention", but that would suffer from low turnout due to geographic separation of interested parties more than likely. However it would be nice in that you wouldn't be paying $7 to ship $0.25 worth of ammo which is the main reason I don't buy items for my collection online unless I get several dozen of the same cartridge.

I think a WTS/WTT "collectable cartridge" sub forum is a great idea. I have some fairly unusual cartridges I could offer up. I am not yet into the extremely rare stuff (like what is in your avatar. Very cool by the way! :yesway:) but I would like to work my way to that level someday.

A cartridge exchange convention would be interesting but also difficult to organize due to the circumstances you mentioned. If it ever happens count me in! :ingo:

Wow, that is an impressive collection scout! I think you win the gold star. I only have one cartridge that is not on that list. 8x56R, you have about 25 that I don't have.

I have a few things I picked up along the way from various eras that I had no idea what they were at the time and a handful of things my grandfather brought back from WWI.

Not really a cartridge collector though.

I collect small gear (like bayonets and survival gear) and uniform adornments, mostly. While my grandfather brought back a few cartridges, he mainly brought back interesting pieces of enemy uniforms and a few letters with stamps and military franking markings taken from those he was able to take them from.

He was born in 1890 and in '68 he passed and left his entire collection of German frankings to me (I was a young philatelist at the time _still am a bit_ and he had quite a few signatures, most I can not identify, so no historical meaning, but to me) but as time passed and I came to maturity everyone else in the family gave me what other mysterious things they had received from his "estate." Not sure I have it all but I have a decent amount of things my grandfather brought back from his war, including his "departure day" picture, something they used to do, since pictures were still new to everyone.

I probably keep forty or so old cartridges, most of which have already been mentioned, I think. I did notice that the longest lists included cartridges that are still available to this day.
    Fills in a collection, though.
