I'm trying to rundown what the mask requirements will be for the Boat Sport And Travel Show. I'm unclear on what the fairgrounds/county/city might require. The BSTS website is a bit ambiguous...

    COVID 19 SAFETY MEASURES
The Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center follows the Indiana Department of Health and Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) guidance on COVID-19 protocols for the State of Indiana. Masks will not be required while visiting the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center for fully vaccinated individuals in public outdoor settings. If you are not vaccinated, guests are encouraged to wear a face covering and should follow the CDC guidelines on when wearing a face covering is warranted. The CDC currently recommends fully and non-vaccinated individuals wear a mask in public indoor settings .

I have a buddy who wants to go again after we've missed a couple years during the pandemic.

I have two situations in my head going at once here. I'm not big on making the many hours drive to make the trip to be required to mask. I think masking will take any fun out of the show.

The other part of my situation is that my buddy is over 80. He was also sick last week, in and out of the hospital. Not covid, but not really identified either. He said that he is fine now, been out running around in the snow this morning. Maybe the smart idea is to not take him or go to the show at all? :dunno:

Another thought is that we noticed the show seemed smaller, with less vendor participation our last visit, 3 years ago. Makes me wonder if vendor participation now will be really weak this show?

I don`t understand how wearing a mask would take the fun out of the show? The masks are precisely what would keep your 80 year old buddy as safe as he can be. As far as whether he should go, he can decide for himself, right? Just my 2 cents, since you asked.

He can, but I'm sure he won't go without me.

I'm trying to decide now whether I want to risk facilitating him getting exposed to covid?

Seems like an easy decision, if you really care about your friend. Even more so since he was recently sick in the hospital, and may not be fully recovered from whatever he had.

I think this explains it. It's "encouraged". Just like Walmart and Kroger "encourage" customers wear a mask. Go maskless if you want. At least that's my interpretation.

Edit: I didn't read far enough down in your original post. I don't think a mask will protect your friend from anything. I'd go if he is willing and understands the risk to himself, even if minimal.

Your friend should wear a mask or not go. If you are taking him and will be in the car with him, perhaps you should wear a mask while in the car as consideration for his poor health. Not passing judgement, just seeking a compromise on this particular situation.

I think the simple answer is that I'm not gonna take the risk going, for my friend or myself. Both of us presently have work and family responsibilities that make the event not worth it. Neither of us should volunteer to possibly get sick, especially at this time.

No fussing with masks or crowds or germs or any of that.

    Thanks for everyone's :twocents: !

Again, the hypocrisy. Why would masks only be encouraged if you are unvaccinated? The vaccinated can catch and spread the virus as well. Ah well....

Just an fyi.. the mask nor the vaccine keep you from getting covid. We have had as many or more people who are vaccinated get covid then non vaccinated. So the vaccine doesn't keep you from getting it. Unless your wearing a legit respirator/mask your kidding yourself. I know many folks who have gotten covid who wear surgical mask and t-shirt material mask who still get covid. Not counting that most people touch their face constantly when they have a mask on ehich is worse then not wearing one. Are you gonna live in a fear porn bubble forever? Ultimately its your call..

No, nothing will keep you from getting Covid if you`re exposed and have taken no precautions. Being vaccinated certainly won`t keep you from getting, or spreading the Wuhan flu. However, properly wearing an N-95 or surgical mask can and will keep you from spreading the virus if you`re infected. Cloth masks are worthless, and that`s why the hospitals insist you wear a surgical mask minimum. My mask protects you, and your mask protects me. Properly wearing a good mask, along with distancing and proper hand washing is effective in reducing the spread of Covid, as well as the common cold and influenza bug.

The first cold and flu season after Covid came along was interesting to me. In a typical year, I`m good for 2-3 good colds, a good bout of the flu, and every 3-4 years a terrible bout of bronchitis. But that year, with the mask wearing, the hand sanitizing, and social distancing, I never even had a sniffle, and I work at a hospital.

Don`t discount what good health hygiene can do to prevent the spread of any contagious bug.

BS, surgical masks do not stop Covid spread, especially the highly contagious omicron…

Good to hear from you again, my friend! I assume the family is well?

When I told my buddy I wasn't going, he was pissed and rambled on about not being scared for the rest of your life. I told him that I understood that, but I wasn't gonna help contribute to seeing that happen sooner than later.

Buddy smart-assedly asked if I was gonna come take care of his wife (as he does,) so he could go to the show himself? I told him that's exactly what I was talking about, Neither of us should be taking unnecessary risks IMHO. Maybe next year?

I like your elderly friends attitude. He has grit and is a Patriot. The Country would be in a lot less of this Government created mess if there were more people like him with his outlook!
