A couple of weeks back, I bought a Bersa Thunder 380 and have been very happy with it. I've put over 200 rounds through it and it works great without a single failure of any type. Now I'm thinking I need a 9mm in the collection to go along with the .45 1911, Bersa 380 and some .22 pistols.

I'm thinking about picking up a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact and was wondering how the groups experience with that particular model has been. The consensus was very good on the Thunder 380 and my experience makes me think the Thunder 9 might be a good choice also, but it is a completely different gun, so I could be wrong. I'm trying to keep the cost under $400 and want something that could be CC if I need to. I currently carry the Springfield 1911 or 380 depending on the weather and what I'm wearing.

Are these as good as the Thunder 380 or did they just get lucky on that one?

    Thanks,

The Thunder 9's reliability seems to be on par with the .380. My biggest gripes are that it's a little wide in the grip compared to other pistols of similar capacity, and that spare mags are ungodly expensive.

That's a point that I never remember until I buy a gun: Magazine cost. At something like $30 per mag, it starts to seem like an ink jet printer and its cartridges. By the printer cheap, but pay through the nose for cartridges needed to make is useful.

I'll have to research the price and think more along the lines of the cost of the gun plus at least 5 magazines and see how it compares to others. Maybe a Glock or XDm might seem affordable after all.

    Thanks for the input.

So, if you get a pistol and 6 extra mags you're talking $240 on top of the cost of the pistol for the extra mags. Mag cost can be significant.

I'm really anxious to see one of those in person. Could give the Kahr P9/CW9, Kel-Tec PF9 and Taurus 709 a run for their money.

I got a used Ultra-Compact at Bradis the other day, and it had a total of 3 mags with it. That was the deal maker.

Interesting. The normal package has two mags. Really like mine- the 9 is often cited as the best of the Bersa line at bersatalk.com. A bonus mag is very nice...

I need to hang out around Bradis more often. You never know what they'll have around. The Bersa 9 with 3 mags would have come home with me had I been lucky enough to find it. Nice find.
