Barrels for a Maverick 88 Mossberg 12 gauge

I'm a new shotgun owner. My gun has an 18.5" barrel.
I'd like to get a longer barrel so I can use it for other shooting.
As a newbie, I thought I'd gain some knowledge here.
I assume barrels are manufacturer and mostly model specific. Are there also different types of 28" barrels?
Is there anything that tapers down a little to compact the shot?

Any of the longer Mossberg field barrels should work with that model. That's provided you have the standard 5 shot mag tube.

There are other Maverick 88 models like the home defense version that use a 20 inch barrel and an extended 8 shell mag tube. That puts the lug too far up the barrel. That model won't accept a standard field barrel because of this.

This looks and sounds right. Many of the Maverick 88's parts (about 85% or more) are interchangeable with Mossberg 500 parts.

Mossberg 500 barrels for the 5+1 mag tube guns like yours will fit.
I have the 24" ported barrel with interchangeable choke tubes and it works very well.
